The Pop Almanac Podcast #7: Guiltless Pleasures
Nov 2, 2011 | 10:35 am
The Pop Almanac begins this week with a discussion of Sam and Duncan's recent attempt at trend-setting: Ironic Dining. It involves gleefully eating at chain restaraunts to make fun of them, and is probably one of the reasons people hate America.
But the guiltless pleasure taken in the activity provides this week's topic: what in pop culture do your hosts not only refuse to call a "guilty pleasure," but in fact earnestly defend as great?
Duncan didn't realize he loved Fox's sitcom New Girl until it was pushed back by the World Series. Brendan explains his affection for Spike TV's Deadliest Warrior in detail rivaled only by Pod Boss Sam Pitchel's zeal for Baggage, a dating game hosted by Jerry Springer (yes, that Jerry Springer).
In the music world, Brendan makes a case for punk rock music as a whole since 1998 as an often unjustly-derired subgenre. Finally, Duncan makes the case for two big budget, critically-slammed movies that he loves, in the most contentious episode to date.
