Austin passes 'go' on official new Monopoly board with community input

Considering Austin's highly marketable buzz, it's surprising that the city doesn't have a Monopoly board yet — the Hill Country does. But those days are coming, and fast. With a license from Hasbro, game maker Top Trumps USA will translate life in Austin onto the world-famous square board. Austinites will have a chance to vote for the elements they want to include in the game coming out in 2026.
Entities being considered, according to a press release, include local brands, landmarks, nonprofits, "places, events, establishments, etc." The popularity of each request will be important in what is considered. Every major piece of the game will be themed to match Austin, including not just properties, but also the famous paper currency and Community Chest and Chance cards.
That means that things like Barton Springs, the Continental Club, the Austin City Limits Music Festival (or ACL itself), Eeyore's Birthday Party, Austin Pets Alive!, and the 45th and Lamar Chili's could all be contenders — but it'll probably depend on how much fans of those things care about Monopoly. (This fan's homemade F1 Monopoly board does make one choice pretty obvious.)
As announced at a July 17 event in Austin with Mr. Monopoly, Mayor Kirk Watson, and representatives with Visit Austin, the next steps are simple. Anyone with an idea about what to include can email austin@toptrumps.com, send a direct message on the game maker's Instagram account, or by posting with the tag #MonopolyAustin.
The process is scheduled to take place over "roughly" six months, starting now. When it's available, Monopoly: Austin Edition will be found in stores and online, plus in local gift shops.
This year makes 90 for the iconic game, which was originally based on the local haunts of Atlantic City, New Jersey. We'll see how Austinites in 2025 feel about pricing other players out of visiting longtime cultural institutions for sport — but maybe doing so as a fun little metal hat will lessen the symbolic blow.
“Austin has a culture unlike anywhere else across the world — and we aim to ensure MONOPOLY: AUSTIN Edition features an authentic portrayal of what local residents and visitors alike love about the Lone Star State’s capital city,” said Top Trumps spokesperson Josie Cole in the release.
