Huge Austin esports event welcomes public with drone show, streaming

The tournament is sold-out, but there are other ways to watch and engage.
A huge esports event is descending on Austin from June 19-22. The Counter-Strike Austin Major is in its playoffs phase at Moody Center, having sold out tickets to an estimated 50,000 fans in just six hours. Even if you didn’t snag a ticket, a free drone show and plenty of streaming options for the remaining matches mean locals can still get in on the fun. There are eight matches left before a victor emerges.
The qualifiers have been going on since June 3, with 32 teams from around the world competing for $1.25 million prize pool. The game is Counter-Strike 2, a multiplayer tactical first-person shooter — in non-gamer language, that means a realistic combat simulator that is played in teams. According to a press release, this is the first Counter-Strike Major in the U.S. since 2018.
Tech enthusiasts can meet up at the front plaza at Moody Center at 9:30 pm on Friday, June 20, for a drone show launching from Mike Myers Soccer Stadium at UT Austin (707 Clyde Littlefield Dr.). The free 12- to 15-minute show will be presented by Alienware, the official PC, laptop, and monitor sponsor for the event. Tickets are not needed to attend the public show.
The choreography includes 12 animated scenes, "celebrating creativity powered by cutting-edge technology," according to the release.
Pedestrians with an eye on the sky might also catch a glimpse of the show, but it may not look like much if viewed at the wrong angle. Some scenes will be broadcast with the games online over the weekend.
To watch all the esports events live online, viewers can go to blast.tv, Twitch, or YouTube. Finally, some teams and fans are hosting unofficial watch parties.
