Wearing the White stuff: Celebrating Memorial Day in Summer's Signature Shade
I suppose "The White Stuff" is how the chart-smashing hit by New Kids on the Block would have sounded if Jordan, Joey, Donny, Danny, and Jon all had speech impediments and struggled with pronouncing their "R's." Or possibly how Lindsay Lohan/Charlie Sheen/insert_your_favorite_celeb_struggling_with_illegal_narcotic_addiction refer to their drug of choice. But lucky for you I'm not here to write about the various methods for corrective speech therapy, pop jingles, or celebs in rehab.
Instead the focus remains on celebrating the official blessing to bust out your favorite white items from the depths of your closet or stock up by adding some new ones to the mix as we celebrate Memorial Day. (Patriotic guilty conscience note: I realize the true spirit of Memorial Day is to honor the brave men and women who died while selflessly serving our country in the United States Armed Forces; wearing white is clearly the secondary celebration here. Cue Star Spangled Banner intro music and a hefty salute.)
As I'm a huge fan of incorporating color every chance I get, white can be a terrific background palette for which to layer on bold accessories or makeup. Think along the lines of a plain white tank with a refreshing burst of fuschia lipstick or great piece of statement jewelry to spice things up.
Also white's not a bad option when the sweltering heat reaches triple digits. Nothing says Texas summer like "I want to rip my clothes off because I chose to wear black in an effort to mask my blatantly obvious sweat spots."
So whether you recently found yourself blankly staring at your closet in preparation for this past Friday's Lifeworks White Party or anxiously checking your mail box each day in hopes of scoring an invite to P. Diddy's infamous annual white party in the Hamptons later this summer, let this guide serve as a small piece of inspiration to get you off on the "white foot." Oh how I love me a good pun.
