Officially kicked-off Friday night, Austin Fashion Week is a seven day showcase of the freshest and finest in local fashion, jewelry, hair and make up designs. Similar to SXSW, larger events require a badge, but many of the official showcases are completely free, with the majority offering complimentary food and drinks, live music and all kinds of swag.

Free, official showcases will be going on all week, but there are a handful of great free AFW options for your Saturday. We're sharing with you an unofficial guide to Day One of AFW.

Estilo & Rene Guest Kick off AFW with CultureMap: Estilo at 6 p.m.

CultureMap is teaming up with Estilo on 2nd to celebrate the gorgeous jewelry designs of Austin’s Rene Guest. Sip on Magners Cider cocktails, browse the latest styles at Estilo and listen to live beats from DJ Johnny Bravvo.

Ruth Waddy: Designer Trunk Show and Reception: Austin Rocks at 6 p.m.

Ruth Waddy is one of the official designers of AFW, and will feature her designs in the runway show at the end of the week. Before the big runway show, she will be debuting her line “Ruthless,” which incorporates recycled fabric, plastic and rubber at Austin Rocks on Saturday. You can get a sneak peek at her latest collection for free.

Etcetera, etc. showcases Crowned Bird: Etcetera, etc. at 7 p.m.

Witness the launch of up-and-coming designer Priscilla Barroso of The Crowned Bird with free cocktails and sweet treats from Austin’s Forgiving Martha. There will be two live giveaways and a photo booth for your entertainment. Barroso’s line is funky, fresh and worth checking out.

50 Shades of Fashion: Urban Betty Salon at 7 p.m.

Urban Betty Salon will be combining fashion and charity at the 50 Shades of Fashion event benefiting Lone Star Paralysis. The showcase invites you to wear your most fashion-forward black, white and gray apparel (in honor of the sexiest novel in America), participate in the silent auction, help yourself to complimentary cocktails and browse the work of Austin-based jewelry designer, Femailler.

Joie De Vintage Fashion Show | Joie De Vie Salon & Spa at 7 p.m.

We’re really excited about Joie De Vie Salon and Spa’s runway event! This showcase features local designers and artisans, including Electric Frenchie’s “Time Capsule” vintage collections. Stuff yourself with treats from Easy Tiger, Twin Peaks and Sugar Tooth Bakery, wash it down with beverages from Deep Eddy Vodka and Thirsty Planet Brewing, then shake it to the tunes of local favorite, Shakey Graves!

Most events in our unofficial guide to Day One of AFW are located around 2nd Street (with a few exceptions), allowing you to park your car early and wander between events without having to deal with pesky traffic. And with all of the free cocktails that you’ll be drinking, you shouldn’t be on the road anyway.
