Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone look to the cool things with new collection
For next spring, Rag & Bone designers Marcus Wainwright and David Neville celebrate the simple life. Their duo, known for its crisp, clean collections aimed at the young hipster, presented a line-up of unadorned looks at New York's fashion week this fall, with oversized blazers in black, peach and shiny white worn over crop tops and with above-the-ankle slacks, plunging V-neck sweaters in navy, white and aqua, perforated leather carpenter pants and mesh ribbed see-through dresses.
About the only pop of bright color came with the orange/red lipstick that each model wore.
Among the cool girls in the audience was Lake Bell, who has received a lot of praise this year for her quirky movie about voice-over artists, In A World....
The duo certainly knows how to cut a blazer that can that will last for years as an investment piece. The unadorned overalls in all black or all white will likely go out of style in a season or two, but the look is modern and a must for any young woman who wants to look cool.
Among the cool girls in the audience was Lake Bell, the actress/writer/director who has received a lot of praise this year for her quirky movie about voice-over artists,In A World.... Newly married to tattoo artist Scott Campbell, whose family lives in Houston, Bell recalled visits to Austin, Dallas and Houston last month to promote the movie.
"I traveled through Texas with a big cowboy hat on my head. I had a good time," she said. "I'm thankful. I love Texas."
About the critical praise of the movie, she said, "Oh my god, it's a dream come true. I'm still in this position of just being happy to be here. To be in this position is really special."
Alexander Wang is so cool that Kayne West showed up on the front row of his show — and hardly anyone noticed. Amid several giant erector sets in a dark, cavernous building, models showcased Wang's spring collection of pleated cheerleader skirts and boyfriend shirts in baby blue and pastel pink, buckled pants and a mesh sweatshirt with the words "Parental Advisory: Explicit Content" covering the model's breasts. Even though the collection won't be in stores until next year, Rihanna has already been spotted in a pink version that Wang created especially for her.
Wang returned to the '90s with a logo-theme series of jumpers, slipdresses and coats featuring his name laser-cut into leather fabric in a 21st century way. The Alexander Wang name appeared in the waistband of cutout dresses and even on elbow-length pink gloves in perforated cutouts. It lent a downtown street sensibility that Wang is known for.
And since he now also designs the Balenciaga collection in Paris, it looks like he wants to put a stamp on his own namesake line in a more forceful way.
