Birkenstock to open first Texas outlet store in San Marcos

Birkenstocks are some of the most easily identifiable shoes out there.
Although outsides might associate Austin with cowboy boots, the casual, outdoorsy folk here are equally partial to a practical sandal. Good news for the thrifty among them: Birkenstock is opening its first Texas outlet store at the San Marcos Premium Outlets in April.
Birkenstock, a German shoe manufacturer that traces its history back to 1774, is known for its signature slide-on sandals, classically featuring two broad straps with buckles. Even people who have never tried on Birkenstocks or couldn't pick them out of a lineup have probably heard of the brand, since it's become a cultural symbol in much the same way as Converse sneakers or more aptly, Teva sandals.
The quintessential Birkenstock is rugged and made with cork, leather, or other earth-colored materials meant to mimic them, but there are also more whimsical designs: pink and waterproof, studded with metallic accents, or even fit for a wedding — according to Birkenstock's casual standards, at least. The important part is that they're designed to support healthy feet.
The release does not disclose exactly what will be available at the outlet store, but in general, Birkenstock shoppers can expect styles for men, women, kids, and teens (that in many cases look basically identical), including fashion sandals, clogs, sneakers, boots, and even (moderately) high heels.
Shoppers will find the store next to the very different Karl Lagerfeld Paris.
The San Marcos Premium Outlets recently celebrated the opening of a Cuadra outlet, the first in the country for the Mexican leather brand. It's also adding beauty retailer Sephora in June.
The outlet mall is located at 3939 Interstate 35, about 45 minutes from Austin.
