The suite life
New high-rise ‘resort’ somehow just quietly opened in downtown Austin
A 22-story timeshare “resort” rather quietly opened on February 20 at West Eighth and Nueces streets, just west of downtown and near the former site of Austin’s main library.
Wyndham Austin, located at 516 W. Eighth St., features 189 one- to three-bedroom, condo-style suites available through the Club Wyndham and WorkMark by Wyndham timeshare clubs.
According to Austin Towers, the building was originally slated to be traditional condos before it was purchased in early 2017 after construction was completed. 54 Madison Partners, the group that purchased the property, brought Wyndham onto the project in late spring 2017 as the hospitality and branding partner. Despite its behemoth size, the Wyndham Austin has received little fanfare from the community or local press.
"The resort design was inspired by the city's popular theme of 'Keep Austin Weird,'" the company said in a release. The suites range in size from nearly 650 square feet to just over 1,500 square feet — considerably bigger than an average hotel room, and on par with typical condos and apartments.
The property’s amenities include a rooftop infinity-edge pool and sun deck, an activity center, a fitness center, a fire pit, and a barbecue area. Parking at the onsite garage goes for $30 per night.
“Craving a concrete jungle that radiates energy a la New York minus the overwhelming crowds? Austin, Texas, is known for its quirky nature and hodgepodge of musical and cultural tastes,” the Wyndham Austin says on its website. “You won’t find any cowboys or … cattle in this city. Instead, you’ll marvel at the glittering lights of this small-scale metropolis from the comfort of your resort, equipped with modern amenities to make you feel right at home.”
The property opened with fewer than 100 employees, but the company says the workforce is expected to grow to 150 by this summer.
Wyndham Austin is the sixth Wyndham timeshare resort in Texas. Two of the properties are in San Antonio, with one each in Marble Falls, New Braunfels, and the Hill Country town of Hunt. Wyndham’s timeshare owners also can stay at the Hotel Galvez & Spa in Galveston.
