Closing Time
East Austin bar closes up shop after 2 years at tricky location
Another one bites the dust. East Riverside bar Midway Field House has closed after just two years in business. Despite a reputation for lots of beers, fun arcade games, and watch parties, the sports bar's last call was Saturday, April 16.
It's not the first quick shutter at 2015 E. Riverside Dr., which promised to be a hot destination when it opened four years ago. In that short time, the space also housed Beauty Ballroom, which shuttered after one year, and Antone's, which occupied it for an even shorter stint.
While its troubled history leads one to question the viability of the space, this team isn't giving up so easy. A new concept from the same group — which includes Buzz Mill owner Jason Sabala — is slated to take over soon.
In a letter to bar patrons released Tuesday, Sabala reminisced on the good times before teasing the next phase.
"My grandmammy once told me that 'Life is 10 percent what happens to you, and 90 percent how you respond to it.' Today I set down my clipboard and whistle and walk away from the game. While I will miss it, I can't contain my excitement for what is next not only for me, but more importantly, what is in store for you."
No word yet if they'll take a gamble on music or stick to booze and games.
