Famed Austin barbecue joint stokes fire with new Texas restaurant
In very big barbecue news for Dallas-Fort Worth, Salt Lick BBQ, a regular on best barbecue in Texas lists, plans to open a branch in Grapevine.
The restaurant will go on a 10-acre property nestled in the woods, with 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor dining as well as a specialty wine and beer bar. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2017, and the restaurant will open in late 2018.
The city of Grapevine crowed about the news on its Facebook page, saying that the city "has cleared the way for the award-winning Salt Lick BBQ to join the Grapevine family."
The original restaurant opened in 1967 in Driftwood, 30 minutes southwest of Austin, and is a popular field trip for barbecue hounds and a fun place for Austinites to take out-of-town guests. That location features a barbecue pit in the center of the restaurant.
There's also a location in Round Rock, plus two outlets located at airports, including Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and DFW Airport.
Austin barbecue joints seem to like Tarrant County; Cooper's BBQ opened a branch in Fort Worth in 2010.
Salt Lick owner Scott Roberts says that their location requirements for the DFW restaurant were very specific.
"We have searched the Metroplex the last 10 years for a site where the look and feel of the place would remind us of the Hill Country and allow us to recreate the backyard BBQ party we have in Driftwood," he says in a statement. "We have finally found a Hill Country home in Grapevine."
A Salt Lick spokesperson says that the restaurant will seat 450, with 6,000 square feet of outdoor decks and porches. The architects are Lake/Flato, and they'll observe a Hill Country aesthetic.
"We chose the location because of the large trees and views of Denton Creek the site provided," the spokesperson says.
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the site is on the north side of Grapevine Mills Parkway, west of 185 acres the city purchased from former Texas Rangers player Rafael Palmeiro, now under development.
Kubota Tractor has already opened its new North American headquarters there, and Mercedes-Benz USA is building a parts distribution center and training facility. Other projects in the works include a resort and water park.
