Foodie's Delight
Central Market Westgate unveils massive renovations and new products
Austin is already a food lover’s paradise, but local foodies will soon have a new favorite destination to stock up on fresh and unique ingredients, thanks to the massive renovations at Central Market Westgate. The devotion to quality and selection that recently landed Central Market on Bon Appétit’s list of the eight best neighborhood supermarkets in the country will be seen in updates to be unveiled this week.
So what are some of the changes that Central Market is making such a big fuss over? The first is for chocoholics. Central Market Westgate now boasts the largest assortment of specialty chocolate bars and organic chocolates in Texas, featuring numerous small batch producers from America and Europe.
If you’re a coffee connoisseur you may never want to step into a coffee shop ever again. The Westgate location has invested heavily into a new coffee program dedicated to the sourcing, roasting and brewing of coffee. The focus of the coffee brew bar is to be an educational experience for customers who want to make the best cup of coffee at home.
Central Market, led by staff experts David Leuthold and Chris Bostad, will source beans directly from Brazil and Colombia to then be roasted on-site to produce small batches of high quality coffee with custom craft roasters. Newly trained staff will then brew coffee with customers using a pour-over technique to teach customers a coffee’s best qualities and to walk them through how to brew coffee better than your average barista.
Coffee isn’t the only specialty item with a new, broader selection at Westgate. Bulk foods now have a hefty selection of herbs, tea, oil and vinegar to boast from all across the world. Health nuts should feel right at home in the highly revamped healthy living department that provides all of the vitamins, supplements, and probiotics you could wish for.
On top of all of that, the Westgate store will display its appreciation for the city it calls home with the unveiling of a 60-foot mural by artist Kerry Awn of a view of South Austin that will be on permanent display in the produce department. The mural features iconic images of Austin culture and history.
Central Market will reveal the updates with a full weekend full of Texas music and barbecue. The initial unveiling is a private reception on June 6, but the public can enjoy the store's new scenery all weekend. Music acts including Ruby Jane, White Ghost Shivers, Black Bird 3 and many more will break in the new stage in the store’s café through Sunday.
