Lights out as downtown Austin cocktail lounge suddenly shutters
An upscale bar in Austin’s Warehouse District has shuttered following the sudden death of owner Ian Weightman. Two former employees have confirmed to CultureMap that Moonfire Lounge at 310 Colorado St. Unit B closed on June 22.
Weightman, who died June 17, opened the space in August 2017. He was also known for throwing the annual Blu Party under his Formula Expo Inc. business.
Moonfire Lounge featured luxe interiors, complete with velvet banquettes, sparkling light fixtures, and a cozy electric fireplace. The bar's main draw, however, was themed nights, featuring DJ showcases, singles socials, and soccer watch parties. Unlike similar concepts, however, it offered an elevated cocktail program of both classics and originals and a selection of small bites like cheese and charcuterie plates and artisan chocolate truffles.
According to head bartender Michael McBride, the closure happened around 11:30 pm on June 22, when the staff got word that it would have to shut the bar down. The news was a surprise to the employees, many of whom thought they would have until the end of the month.
Although quick not to assign blame during the tragic time, McBride did say that many of the employees who depended on tip money were left in a lurch. A GoFundMe has been set up to help staffers until they can find new jobs.
Weightman was also the proprietor of East Sixth Street concept Attabar, which opened in the former location of greasy spoon Sputnik in March 2018. It’s unclear whether that will also be closed. CultureMap has reached out for clarification.
