East Austin eatery Hoover's Cooking wins big industry award
Chef Hoover Alexander and Alvin "Skip" Walker are celebrating a big honor from their peers. The Greater Austin Chapter of the Texas Restaurant Association recently presented Outstanding Restaurateurs for 2015 awards to the men behind local favorite Hoover's Cooking.
"I was in disbelief, totally blown away when Skeeter informed Skip and I of the award. I am just a working man, and am so humbled and honored to be chosen for this by my peers who best understand the sweat, sleepless nights, sacrifices and hard work that goes into our business," Alexander tells CultureMap.
An East Austin native and fifth generation Texan, Hoover Alexander opened his namesake restaurant in 1999. Alexander's delicious Southern favorites have kept Austinites coming to the Manor Road eatery for years.
Walker has climbed the ranks from server to general manager. Today, he manages the front of the house in addition to working with Hoover's Cooking's catering service and several of the restaurant's community outreach programs.
"I am so proud to share this honor with someone who does not often get the recognition he deserves," says Alexander. "[Walker] has always brought a true ownership mentality to Hoover's Cooking and to our community. He is the definition of a 'servant leader' with his passion, dedication, integrity and hard work."
