Cheer on USA at 8 Austin spots opening early for Women's World Cup championship
The U.S. team’s path to the 2019 Women’s World Cup final has produced highlight after highlight. The 13-0 shutout of Thailand, Alex Morgan’s tea sipping celebration in the semifinal game against England, Megan Rapinoe’s triumphant pose after scoring against France (not to mention her iconic pink hair). On July 7, the team heads to the championship, battling either Sweden or Netherlands for the crown.
Can't make it to France by Sunday? Luckily there are plenty of places around Austin opening early to air the championship game (and its 10 am start time). Even better, these spots are also offering special game day deals. Whether or not the U.S. team ultimately prevails, you’ll still be a winner.
Cover 3
With cushy seating, multiple screens, craft cocktails, and elevated pub grub, this upscale sports bar is one of the most luxe places to watch the finals. As a special treat, chef Justin Manzi has created a limited Wings of the World menu with international flavors to make sure every customer scores big.
Easy Tiger Linc
Join the Lady Birds of Austin Anthem at Easy Tiger Linc for the championship game. Enjoy special guests, giveaways, "and maybe some prizes," according to the Lady Birds. Prizes or not, guests can toast to the red, white, and blue along with sponsor Tito's Vodka. Worth a note — this spot is kid- and dog-friendly, so bring the whole family.
Fresa’s Chicken al Carbon
The South First Street location will be throwing a blowout watch party for the big event, with a giant 115-inch screen showing every bit of the action. The restaurant will also offer happy hour all day with a $2 discount off aguas frescas, beer, wine, margaritas, and botañas like chicken flautas or black bean pachucos. Seating, however, is limited, so email events@fresaschicken.com to reserve a spot.
Friends and Allies Brewing
Kick it during the finals at this comfortable taproom on Springdale Road. The brewery will be offering two $3 specials during the event: pints of Sportsball lager and “beer-mosas” aka Springdale white ale with orange juice. The doors open at 9:45 am, and breakfast will be available for hungry fans.
Haymaker
This East Austin gastropub has hosted a raucous party for every game of the Women's World Cup, and Sunday is no different. Haymaker will open at 8:30 am for pre-coverage and has even crafted a special sandwich for the occasion. The Go USA Chicken Sandwich features a char-grilled chicken breast, romaine, tomato, mayonnaise, and a creamy jalapeño-avocado sauce, and is topped with peppered bacon and Ruffles potato chips on a sesame seed bun. Comes with a choice of kettle chips, coleslaw, or french fries.
Native Hostel
This chic East Austin haunt has been the Capital City’s soccer headquarters all summer, airing the Copa América and the Concacaf Gold Cup, but the final game of the FIFA Women’s World Cup will be the biggest party of them all. Score with drink specials like half-off margaritas and canned beer, $4 Austin Eastciders Rosé, and $6 Buchanan’s Copa cocktails all benefiting local youth development program Upper Ninety. Ranch Hand will get in on the fun, too, with a $15 combo platter.
Pluckers
All locations of Austin’s favorite chicken wing stop will open early for diners who want to cheer on the U.S. team. Another reason to cheer? All cocktails will be discounted by a buck throughout the day. Order one with the restaurant's Tater Cakes — four oversized tots topped with bacon and cheese and served with a sour cream dipping sauce.
The Stagger Lee
This Rainey Street newcomer invites fans to come thirsty for its watch party, featuring $3 wells, $2.50 domestic bottles, $2.50 select tall boys, and $5 frozen drinks. Do-Rite Barbecue, the bar’s resident food truck, will also be dishing out chips and salsa and all the smoked meats fans can handle.
