This Barbie Loves Austin
Live in your Barbie world with these 10+ themed Austin parties, treats, and more
Austin is turning pink with excitement for Barbie, the Greta Gerwig film that has people everywhere obsessed with a movie they haven't seen yet. Is it the amazing PR, the escapism, or just the immaculate overstatement of gender norms to the extent that they're rendered basically useless? Whatever the reason, Greta Gerwig's Barbie is a cause for celebration, and people really seem to want that right now.
On July 21, pink-clad audiences will descend on movie theaters across the country. But it's looking like things will be especially exciting around here: According to Google Trends, Texas was the third-most interested state in the search query, "Barbie."
Not that fans need any help in this department, but these parties, spectacles, and offers will help Austin get in the mood for this exciting film, and a more fantastic life in plastic going forward. Check back for more as they come up.
A love note and a hotel soiree by Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. is kicking things off with two public official partner activations. First, the "I Love You So Much" mural at Jo's Coffee now reads as a personalized love note from Barbie to Ken, until July 17. Next, Fairmont Austin is lighting its "crown" (the top row of the building) pink, starting Friday. It's also hosting a themed event with the soundtrack playing, a Barbie box photo op, and film-inspired cocktails.
Barbie Cakes by SusieCakes
Surely some Barbies, Kens, and other dolls will be seizing the opportunity to host a costume party at home, and SusieCakes has just the centerpiece. The bakery offers custom cakes built around Barbie like a gown, with a choice of dolls, sprinkles, buttercream, and cake flavor. Margot Robbie celebrated her birthday with one of these cakes — by this exact bakery. That's Barbie-approved. Preorder 48 hours in advance at susiecakes.com.
Special Barbie-themed offerings at Las Bis
This one is for the dolls who want to get in on the fun on the down-low (until the pics hit Instagram, that is). The rooftop cocktail bar offers two themed items during its regular service: the "Barbie-licious Cosmo" and "Barbie’s Blini Bites." The drink is like a pink lemonade with Grand Marnier, vodka, lemon-lime Oleo Saccharum sherbert, and pink lemon garnish. The snacks are like little pink pancakes with hibiscus, smoked trout roe, and lemon crema. Try them from July 17-23. Las Bis does not accept reservations.
Barbie Party at Pinballz
This Barbie hangs out at the arcade. It may not be as obvious as a cocktail lounge, but Pinballz is thinking just as pink, if not more so with a guest runway. A costume contest on July 20 will give cosplayers or just stylish dressers a chance to make the most of their celebratory outfits. There are categories for kids and adults, a photo booth with props, a themed cocktail menu, and edible glitter. No one takes a costume contest as seriously as gamers.
Pink lobster rolls at Garbo's On Lamar
We know Malibu Barbie is popular, but Maine Barbie is also living her coastal dreams out of the spotlight. Garbo's On Lamar is serving something gorgeous and protecting reproductive rights for the occasion. The obligatory pink menu item is a lobster roll on a specially-made pink bun from EasyTiger with edible glitter and flowers, and optional caviar. A portion of sales will go to Planned Parenthood. These are available from July 20-22, and there will be a limited number at this location only from 11 am to 8 pm.
Barbie-inspired cocktails and drag queen bingo at Lefty's Brick Bar
Do we think the Barbie resurgence has something to do with drag culture going mainstream? Absolutely. Let's go straight to the source at Lefty's Brick Bar for a drag celebration with on-theme queens, bingo, a mini-market by Eastside Popup, and themed drinks. This party is only on July 26, but the drinks — pink and pool-ready — will be available from July 21 through August 20, so this is one of the longest celebrations. Vixen's Wedding, also at the Arrive hotel, also has a themed drink and beachy vibes.
Barbie Party at Superstition
Superstition, a very glitzy new club dripping in disco, is already glamorous. Guests show up in their flashiest clothes and dance, order bottle service, or most frequently, take selfies. On July 22, it's all about the Barbies. An all-female DJ crew will take over the DJ booth — DJ Cassandra, Vida Valentina, and Lola — for a dance party just for the dolls. It's giving President Barbie's disco party from the trailer; You'd better shake off that existential crisis and dance.
BA Barbie Bash at Bouldin Acres
Here's one for the sporty Barbies who like lawn games. Bouldin Acres is usually a family-friendly sports bar with a large backyard including pickleball courts. Break out the skorts and tennis shoes on July 22 for the venue's big celebration including a costume contest with prizes, face painting, guest DJs, and food and drink specials — but it doesn't say what those are. The free event does not require an RSVP.
Exclusive Barbie jewelry by Kendra Scott
The parties and pink foods are ephemeral, but don't we deserve to feel the power of pink all the time? Famous Austin jewelry designer Kendra Scott has done one Barbie collab in the past, and now she's ready with another. This time, choose between three necklaces, two bracelets, and four pairs of earrings. Some styles are covert, with pink accents, while others are all gold and say "Barbie." Others combine the two with the iconic cameo logo. Twenty percent of sales benefit the Barbie Dream Gap Project.
Barbie-inspired collection by the Fancy Marshmallow Co.
No food feels more Barbie than gourmet marshmallows, served in a Cedar Park shop that's pink year-round. But it does get even more on-theme. The Fancy Marshmallow Co. made a special collection just for the occasion available from July 18-22, including a pink Italian soda topped with whipped marshmallow cream, and three all-marshmallow confections shaped like donuts (or pool floats, according to the shop), the cameo logo, or pastel-colored squares in a six-piece box.
Wig Parties at Coco Coquette
This one isn't a Barbie exclusive, but it doesn't need to be — it's already so well-suited to the occasion. Coco Coquette, a wig and costume shop in East Austin, honors the timeless dress-up experience in exquisite detail, with all kinds of fun additions like professional makeovers, instant photos, and even tarot card readings. The parties last two to three hours and everyone goes home with a wig ($100 per person, plus add-ons). Book a party or just solo-shop for a wig to wear to the theater at coco-coquette.com.
