East Austin cocktail bar pairs haunting art exhibition with new menu

"Ghost Stories" features evocative blurred portraits, 10 of which are available for purchase.
Papercut, a hybrid art gallery and cocktail bar in East Austin, is known for its moody interiors and avant-garde bar program. Leaning into these themes, it has announced a new art exhibition called Ghost Stories, paired with an all-new cocktail lineup starting July 2.
Ghost Stories is a series of blurred portraits in which the subject's face is captured in beautiful detail, but deliberately obscured. The results are haunting, evocative, and ghost-like images.
A press release uncovers the intent behind the work: "These are not paintings of specific people, but of the sensation of knowing: that moment you lock eyes with someone on the street and wonder if they were once part of your life, or perhaps still are. The work invites viewers to confront the fallibility of perception, the unreliability of memory, and the deep human urge to find connection."
Papercut's gallery space will feature Ghost Stories until late August, with 10 pieces of art for sale ranging between $800 and $3,500.
To accompany these eerie portraits, Papercut's new cocktail menu pushes flavor boundaries by combining unexpected ingredients. It's the brainchild of Dragan Gale Milivojević (previously Here Nor There, Bacalar, Prelude) and Jesus Verde (previously Here Nor There), two of Austin’s most respected bar talents.
Some highlights from this new drink menu include:
- Familiar Strangers: The Lost Explorer Mezcal Espadín and Tobalá, chamoy, chile morita, mango, whole milk, lime acid ($20)
- Terracotta: Italicus, Savoia Orancio, burnt sharbatsoda, mezcal mist ($18)
- Mai Thai: Patron Silver Tequila, Thai cordial, almond acid, Kota pandan liqueur, orange bitters ($19)
- The Holy Coconut: Diplomatico planas, cocchi americano, tamarind, palo santo, pineapple, lime, carbonation ($20)
- 0% Papercut Paloma: Almave Blanco, grapefruit, tomatillo, carbonation ($12)
- Eagle Effect: Almave Blanco, ginger, pear, sage, lapsang mist ($12)
- AmericaNo: The Pathfinder, verjus blanc, burnt sharbat soda ($12)
In May, Papercut was named one of the Top 10 New Cocktail Bars in America, a category in the 2025 Tales of The Cocktail Spirited Awards. It didn't quite make the finals, announced June 24. Of the four finalists that remain in the category, three are in New York City and one is in Miami.
Papercut is located at 908 E. 5th St., #107 in East Austin. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are encouraged for weekends.
