Ever-changing Austin restaurant launches experiential wine pairing class
With the number of wines available on the shelf at your local H-E-B or liquor store, finding the right one to pair with your dinner plans or get-togethers may appear intimidating. An experiential new class led by Austin's new culinary incubator aims to educate guests on how to pair wine and food for different occasions.
Playground ATX founder Sue Kim-Drohomyrecky is debuting a 90-minute wine workshop on Monday, January 15, that will delve into the world of wine pairing in collaboration with The Zing! Thing, a wine education project founded by Patricia Rogers.
Quirky name aside, the workshop will provide a "serious understanding of how food and wine interact" while catering to a range of participants, from the purely curious to the casual enthusiast.
Attendees will get to sip on mindfully sourced wines from US Natural Wines while learning the "intricate art" of pairing their vintages with various cheeses and charcuterie. The judgment-free space allows guests to freely experiment with different complementary flavors. Kim-Drohomyrecky's expertise will be invaluable as the workshop's leader, relying on her 20-plus years of experience in the restaurant industry.
According to The Zing Thing's website, the key to a good wine and meal pairing is in finding the "moments of nirvana" between the two elements that make you feel "wonder, deliciousness, [and] excitement."
"At every dinner or celebration where we enjoy wine and food, there is a chance to experience ‘a ZiNG! thing,' that magic moment when wine and food come together and just….wow," the website says.
Following the workshop, there will be a question-and-answer session for participants who want to clarify anything they learned during the session, and to learn more about Playground ATX's mission to foster a supportive environment for culinary exploration. Guests can stick around after the class to enjoy a spread of light bites.
The workshop is a part of Playground ATX’s “Mission Monday” series, which allows local culinary creatives to share their passion and educate the community. The next "Mission Monday" events will take place on January 22 with Buster Cooey and his handmade Damascus chef knives, and an East Mets Wings cooking class with Chef Kevin Truong on January 29.
Tickets for the “Zing: Fearless Food and Wine” workshop are $50, and can be purchased on Eventbrite. More information about the event can be found on playground-atx.com.
