Praise, Pies, and Piñatas bring people to East Austin Farmer's Market

Nothing screams Austin quite like an event that combines praise, pies, and piñatas with an effort to celebrate diversity and support local farmers, artisans, and community groups. This was the mission of the inaugural Community Outreach Sunday at HOPE Farmer's Market called "Praise, Pies and Pinatas." HOPE Community Program's Manager Elizabeth Garrett said they plan to hold many more outreach events like this in the future.
“We want to reach out and engage the East Austin Community in a fun and interactive way,” Garrett said. “I think people found joy in sharing pie, watching children smash piñatas, and dancing along with a band with soul.”
Every Sunday from 10am to 2pm you’re guaranteed to find a variety of local food, art and music at HOPE. On this Sunday visitors also found free pie and ice cream and live praise-inspired music.
A piñata smash capped off the day's event. Jacqueline Fernandez’ daughter Chloe was one of about a dozen children who took a shot at Elmo the piñata.
“I like it when I see community events like this that bring a variety of organizations together,” Fernandez said.
While the event was free, donations were taken to support Out Youth, a non-profit that provides support for Central Texas GLBT Youth.
