Go-Kart Track Death
Questions linger in tragic go-kart track crash that left a 14-year-old Texas girl dead
A 14-year-old Flower Mound girl killed in a single-person go-kart crash outside Texas Motor Speedway was laid to rest in a private memorial service on Saturday. Kierstin Eaddy was an experienced go-kart driver participating in an autocross event held by the Sports Car Club of America when she was killed in a freak crash on July 20.
According to reports from the scene of the crash, Eaddy's vehicle accelerated past the finish line and plowed into a fence, knocking off the girl's helmet. Eaddy was airlifted to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, where she was pronounced dead.
The 14-year-old's go-kart apparently malfunctioned, preventing her from stopping a car that can travel at speeds up to 45 MPH. There is no official final word on what went wrong with the car or if it could have been prevented however.
In a statement, Sports Car Club president Lisa Noble expressed her condolences to the girl's family and friends.
"All of us at the SCCA are shocked and saddened to hear about Sunday's tragic accident involving Kierstin Eaddy," Noble said. "We are a club of families and are shaken by the loss of this young competitor.
"Personally, and on behalf of the SCCA, my heartfelt condolences go out to Kierstin's family, friends and the participants at Sunday's event."
