Danke, Lufthansa!
Austin adds new international nonstop flight to chic European city
It's always exciting when Austin lands another nonstop international flight, but the latest destination has us polishing out beer steins in anticipation. On October 4, German-based Lufthansa announced it is adding nonstop service from Austin to Frankfurt, Germany.
Beginning May 3, 2019, the airline is offering flights five days a week from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to Frankfurt Airport. The flight's Airbus A330-300 offers three cabin options — Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class — and runs Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Lufthansa's new flight departs ABIA at 4 pm and arrives in FRA at 9:05 am. Return flights take off from Frankfurt at 10 am, landing in Austin at 2:05 pm. Tickets for the new route are currently on sale.
“This is a major leap forward for our community," said Doug Driskill, Austin Chamber of Commerce Vice Chair for Air Services, in a release announcing the news. “The new nonstop service to continental Europe, and the addition of an award winning carrier in Lufthansa that will soon be serving Austin, is crucial to our region’s business recruitment and retention activities. It also provides direct economic benefits to our local economy.”
Though other airlines have long been servicing the Austin-to-Frankfurt route, what makes the Lufthansa experience different is the quality of service and amenities. The self-proclaimed "only 5-star rated airline in the Western Hemisphere," Lufthansa is also rated the No. 10 best airline in the world, according to Skytrax, a U.K.-based consultancy that ranks and reviews airlines.
ABIA is Lufthansa's third gateway in Texas; the luxury airline currently operates in both Dallas and Houston.
