Little Park Big Changes
Big changes coming to South Austin's favorite little park and wading pool
Some big changes are coming to Little Stacy Park. On January 2, the City of Austin announced the neighborhood greenspace, tucked away in Travis Heights, will close beginning January 7 to reopen in early summer.
At 6.73-acres, Little Stacy packs a mighty amount of amenities in its relatively small footprint, transforming the park into a sort of is a neighborhood secret treasure. In addition to the famed wading pool, the grounds include tennis courts, a volleyball court, half-size basketball court, playground, and picnic area.
Plans for the renovation project are designed to address the park's current drainage and erosion issues, add facility and playground upgrades, and make it ADA compliant.
Beginning this summer, Little Stacy patrons can expect to find:
- ADA compliant sidewalks.
- concrete pads with picnic tables and grills.
- a new basketball half-court.
- new rain gardens.
- accessibility and parking space upgrades.
- retrofitting of existing restrooms to meet ADA compliance.
- updated tennis court lighting.
- new lighting fixtures to enhance public safety.
Austin landscape architecture firm Asakura Robinson was tapped for the initial design and locally owned ASD Consultants, Inc. will oversee construction. According to city documents, project funding is coming from the 2012 Capital Improvement Bond and Parkland Dedication Fees.
During the Little Stacy renovation, access to the park areas containing the tennis courts, restroom facility, play equipment, picnic tables, and grills will be closed. Sunset Lane, which runs along the east side of the park, will remain open during the construction period, according to a city release.
