Lonesome Dove Lands in Austin
Downtown dining shuffle: Kenichi closes, Lonesome Dove moves in
Boisterous Texas chef Tim Love is planting some new roots in the Capital City.
On Tuesday, Fort Worth-based Love announced via Twitter that his high-end Lonesome Dove concept is coming to Austin. "I'm excited and humbled to confirm that a second location of the Lonesome Dove will be coming to the heart of downtown Austin," he posted.
According to Austin360, that "heart of downtown" location is 419 Colorado St., the former home of sushi restaurant Kenichi. Kenichi, Austin360 reports, shuttered on Monday night. No opening date is set for Lonesome Dove.
Though this is Love's first restaurant in town, the chef is no stranger to Austin. In fact, he's one of the founders of the Austin Food & Wine Festival alongside Charlie Jones (C3 Presents), Tyson Cole and Jesse Herman. And Love — known for his rather raucous behavior and big personality — is a fixture of the annual fest. His grilling demos have proved to be an event favorite (and we think it's for more than just the obligatory tequila shots).
If you haven't seen him at the festival, chances are you'll recognize Love from one of his television appearances. Currently, you can catch him on CNBC's Restaurant Startup; Love has also appeared on Top Chef Masters.
Love owns several other restaurants in Fort Worth, including Woodshed Smokehouse and Love Shack. His highly regarded Lonesome Dove serves western cuisine with a focus on meat dishes, such as rabbit-rattlesnake sausage, Rocky Mountain elk loin, beef tenderloin and lamb brisket.
His focus may be the meat, but we recommend a side of tequila, too. The bistro is known for its jalapeno cucumber margarita, or you can take a page out of Love's book and simply spring for a frozen shot of Tuaca.
