Bundled up with hot chocolates in hand, Austinites descended below the city streets and onto the beds of Waller Creek on Thursday, November 13 for Creek Show.
For one night only, a stretch of the waterway between Fifth and Ninth streets was transformed into a magical urban light show with installations from local architects and design houses including Baldridge Architects, Thoughtbarn, Jason Sowel and Legge Lewis Legge.
The event was a true Austin experience, with people of all ages enjoying the crisp weather as they strolled along the creek. As the lights transformed the caverns and creek beds, a DJ spun tunes on the Sabine Street deck and members of the Waller Creek Conservancy gathered on the patio of the Gatsby to take in a project more than a year in the making.
Creek Show was a part of the Conservancy's efforts to transform the once-neglected Waller Creek into a cultural and ecological destination in the heart of downtown. Over the next 10 to 20 years, the creek will be redesigned and redeveloped. In the meantime, Creek Show will host a series of art installations along the 1.5-mile waterway to give the public access to this strange, wonderful and often forgotten space.
