Pan-American film festival in Austin spotlights mariachi, Chilean politics, and more
Cinephiles on the hunt for fresh perspectives have reason to celebrate this month. Austin's premiere showcase for contemporary Latinx and Indigenous cinema is back. The Cine Las Americas International Film Festival (CLAIFF) will celebrate its 26th edition from May 15-19, bringing a lineup of films from a variety of perspectives.
Over the course of five days, the festival will present a mix of narrative features, documentaries, short films, music videos, and youth-made works from the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Iberian Peninsula. In total, over 25 countries will be represented, spotlighting the vibrant diversity of filmmaking.
The festival kicks off with Alejandra Vasquez & Sam Osborn's Going Varsity in Mariachi. The documentary about a competitive mariachi team in Texas premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW) in 2023, and especially charmed CultureMap Austin's film-loving then-editor as one of her festival highlights. Closing night features Lone Scherfig's La Contadora de Peliculas (The Movie Teller), a Chilean, Spanish, and French-produced film about movies framed against Chile's political landscape in the 1960s.
In between, audiences can look forward to acclaimed titles like Itandehui Jansen's Itu Ninu (Where the Corn Fields Are), Laura González's Milonga, Nadia Zoe's A Little Family Drama, and many more. Attendees can see films representing Indigenous, Hispanic, Latinx, Pan-American, and Iberian experiences.
Screenings will be held at the AFS Cinema and Austin PBS, with additional events at We Luv Video and Nepantla Art Gallery. A special "Hecho en Tejas" series will highlight films made right here in the Lone Star State.
CLAIFF will also feature virtual and live Q&As with plenty of chances to mingle with fellow cinephiles. Juried and audience awards will recognize the most outstanding films.
What started as a passion project by three friends in 1997 has grown into a major cultural event. Cine Las Americas is a multicultural non-profit offering year-round programming, with the International Film Festival as their signature event.
Whether you're a devoted follower of cinema or simply curious to expand your film horizons, CLAIFF has something for everyone.
