How about we take it easy this weekend? Yes, that's what weekends are supposed to be for, but how often are they, actually? Exactly. This weekend, eat chili, buy things you probably don't need and listen to sad songs.
In Progress at Mondo Gallery
You know those awesome movie posters you see the Alamo Drafthouse? The ones you don’t see anywhere else? The ones that look really cool? They come from somewhere, and it happens to be the Mondo Gallery in town.
Starting this Friday at 7 p.m., you can see how these posters were made in their new exhibit In Progress. You can see the etchings, sketchings and original drawings of the gallery's most memorable and iconic posters, like its soft rendering of the already poignant Iron Giant.
Le Garage Sale
Bargain hunters, house-flippers and retail therapy patients, take note: Le Garage Sale, at the Palmer Events Center Saturday and Sunday, is back.
Independent boutiques and stores around town are selling their goods for discounted prices, and this includes men and women’s clothing, jewelry, furniture and surely a litany of other odds and ends that you didn’t know you had to have. It’s $10 to get into the biggest garage sale in town. It sounds dangerous because it is.
Bambi Booth photo booth launch party
Food trailers in Austin are A Thing. Some serve donuts. Most serve tacos. Now they take your photo: Bambi Booth, a converted 1962 Airstream trailer, is a traveling photo booth. Because retro is in. There aren’t similar-looking filters like Instagram, but there are just as many opportunities to mug for the camera.
They’re throwing a launch party Saturday night starting at 6 p.m. at Bungalow on Rainey St. So if you not in the mood for smiling with your eyes, you can down some liquid courage.
Cat Power in concert
Chan Marshall is Cat Power, who knows how to croon a stone cold bummer, Memphis country style. After a too long hiatus, she’s back with a new album she produced entirely on her own, 2012’s Sun, which incorporates some of the most upbeat notes and rhythms in her career. (The single “Ruin” is a disco jam.)
She’s performing a set at ACL Live Saturday night and there’s still tickets available. As prep work, listen to her discography and start feeling a lot of emotions.
7th Jo's Chili Cook-Off Two Steppin' Competition and Benefit
There’s a joke to be made about eating chili when it’s been chilly outside, but I recently resolved to leave more puns alone. New year, new me. But! Jo’s Coffee is hosting its seventh annual chili cook-off and two steppin’ competition this Sunday starting at noon.
Dancing, chili and drinks. All good things. It’s $10 to dance and $20 to taste the chili, and all proceeds go toward People’s Community, Austin's independent clinic offering comprehensive health and wellness care for the uninsured.
