Tragic Accident
29-year-old doctor killed in tragic East Austin moped accident
Police have identified the victim of a moped accident on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. as Gregory Krause, a 29-year-old pediatrician at Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas.
On March 12, Krause was driving his moped down MLK Blvd. near Overhill Rd. when he crashed into a Toyota Camry that had stopped to make a turn. Krause died at University Medical Center Brackenridge the next day. According to his family, "Greg's death has given new life to several grateful recipients through organ donation as he wished."
A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated with highest honors, and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Krause began his career at Dell Children's where, according to his obituary, he met his wife, Amy, a pediatric critical care nurse at the hospital. They married in the summer of 2012.
Seton Healthcare, which oversees Dell Children's, released a press release saying, "Dr. Krause’s death has been an immense blow to not only his family and friends, but to the medical community here in Austin. As a recent graduate of the UT Southwestern Austin Pediatric Residency Program in 2013, residents and faculty who worked closely with Dr. Krause during his training are struggling with this tragic loss."
As news of his passing has spread, many of his patients' families have left their condolences on his remembrance website, along with stories of how his work changed their lives. Krause was to begin a fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology this fall at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon.
Krause and his wife made their home in a "fixer upper" in East Austin, where they raised chickens, gardened and spent time with their dog.
