X Marks The Street Closure
Downtown street closures start on Tuesday as X Games skates into town
The X Games are rolling into Austin, which means a handful of downtown street closures this week. The extreme sports competition is preparing for its Austin debut with a downtown celebration before moving the party to Circuit of the Americas for the weekend.
Closures will affect:
Congress Avenue between 10th Street and the Texas State Capitol
Tuesday at 12:01 am through Friday at noon
10th Street between Brazos and Colorado streets
Tuesday at 12:01 am through Friday at noon
11th Street between Brazos and Colorado streets
Tuesday at 12:01 am through Friday at noon
The city's first-ever X Games kick off on Thursday night at 5 pm with a demo by Tony Hawk and company in front of the Capitol. Hawk's fellow skaters will then compete in a vert competition beginning at 6:30 pm. The BMX and skateboarding vert finals will be held at 8 pm and 9 pm, respectively. Brooklyn-based synthpop duo Holy Ghost! will end the festivities with a performance at 10 pm.
According to a spokesperson for the Downtown Austin Alliance, residents can expect streets to reopen at noon on Friday — just in time for rush hour.
If you just can't wait for Thursday, 101X is hosting the official kick off party on Wednesday, June 4 to benefit The V Foundation. BMX legends Mat Hoffman and Ryan Nyquist will play host as G. Love and Zeale perform. A charity auction will feature prizes such as four VIP passes to the X Games as well as hospitality and ticket package for Formula 1 at Circuit of the Americas.
Tickets for the bash, which is being held at The Belmont, range from $50-125 and feature complimentary catering from Wahoo's. Tickets are available here.
