Weekend Roundup
Work for the weekend of Rollergirls, Game of Thrones, and a 50 Shades spoof
The weekend is back just you were going off the deep end and now everyone wants a new romance.
But I’m not here to paraphrase Loverboy lyrics at you. I’m here to tell you what this potentially gorgeous weekend has in store for you, whether you want some derby action, naughty theatre, or something that’s more wholesome for the family.
Texas Rollergirls Home Team Playoffs
If you’re in the mood to see some tough gals cruisin’ for a bruisin’, Saturday is the day to get swept up in the action as the local teams of the Texas Rollergirls square off on the derby track for playoff glory. Who needs the drawn out NHL and NBA playoffs when you have one night of pure adrenaline?
For the first bout, the Hell Mary's will take on the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers, followed by the Hustlers versus the Hotrod Honeys. Once you’ve had your fill of brutality for the night, mark your calendars for July 13 for the Home Team Championships. In the meantime, get psyched with this awesome promotional video and get a slow-mo feel for the action.
SPANK!: The Fifty Shades of Grey Parody
While the film adaptation of everyone’s favorite BDSM romance novel is still tied up in pre-production, fans and non-fans alike can come together for a unique tribute to the book series that has led to some awkward conversations between you and your mom, probably.
SPANK! is a more lighthearted and musical adaptation/parody of the book, and could be quite a wild girls' night out. There’s no telling if the movie adaptation will star someone like Henry Cavill in the role of the mysterious Christian Grey, but the hunky leading man of SPANK! should be able to whet the appetites of fans for the time being.
Paramount Summer Film Series: Sound of Music Sing-along
The Paramount is continuing with its stellar lineup of classic films for the whole summer, and they aren’t afraid to throw in a little extra fun for their film screenings. Bring the whole family together to introduce them to the Von Trapp family.
Subtitles for all of your favorite songs will be projected in case you might be a little rusty on the lyrics. Your family might not be quite as talented as the Von Trapps, but music is still the best way to bring a family together. And just try not to shed a tear during “Edelweiss.”
Game of Thrones Season 3 Finale at the ND
So if you’re a fan of the hit HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones, this past week has been a pretty rough one for you, even if you’ve read the books and saw it coming from a mile away. Fans of the show may still be really bummed out, but they should still take the time to catch the finale for one of the best shows on television.
The North Door has been screening both the previous week’s episode and the premiere episode on an HD screen with surround sound. There’s no cover, but at least be kind enough to purchase a few food and drinks to thank the ND for their hospitality, although after the last episode we saw how little the law of guest right holds when it comes to Game of Thrones.
