Austin is now pronounced one of the best places in U.S. to get married
Many people fantasize about their dream wedding, and for lucky Austin couples, there's almost no better place to plan it than right here at home.
A new WalletHub study, "Best Places to Get Married," ranks Austin the No. 21 best city in the U.S. for weddings in 2024, and the second-best in Texas.
WalletHub ranked 182 U.S. cities based on the average wedding costs; the number of venues, vendors, and services; and the number of activities and attractions in every city.
Austin ranked highly in two out of the three categories: facilities and services (No. 8), and activities and attractions (No. 15).
According to The Knot, there are more than 100 wedding venues based in Austin, not including the surrounding areas like Dripping Springs, the self-proclaimed Wedding Capital of Texas. Austin also has the highest number of event planners per capita out of all cities in the report, at 65.59.
Most people already know the average cost of a wedding adds up to about $30,000, but Texans can save a few thousand dollars by having a wedding in their home state, where weddings average out to about $27,000.
"A person’s wedding day can be the happiest day of their life, but it can also be a financial nightmare with how expensive venues, food and other essentials are," said WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe in the report.
While Austin is a great place to get married in, based on its popularity as a travel destination and its vast number of wedding venues and services, the city falls behind when it comes to budget-friendly planning. WalletHub's data found the average cost of a wedding in Austin is a little more than the national average, at $34,823. (And chances are, former Bachelor host Chris Harrison and former Entertainment Tonight correspondent Lauren Zima spent a tiny bit more than that on their star-studded Austin wedding bash last fall.)
Happe explained that it's highly beneficial for a couple to get married in a place that "minimizes cost while maximizing options."
"It’s also important to consider the financial needs of guests – even if you can afford a flashy destination wedding, you may not have the best attendance if most guests have to pay for costly flights and lodging," she said.
While Austin fell into second place in Texas, the city that is the best place to get married in the Lone Star State is El Paso, which ranked No. 10 overall.
Sunny Florida cities dominated the top 10. Orlando earned the gold medal as the best place to get married in the nation, with Miami (No. 3) and Tampa (No. 6) following behind. Tourism-friendly cities like Las Vegas (No. 2) and Chicago (No. 9) also ranked highly, especially for couples looking for tourist destination weddings.
The top 10 places to get married in the U.S. are:
- No. 1 – Orlando, Florida
- No. 2 – Las Vegas, Nevada
- No. 3 – Miami, Florida
- No. 4 – Tulsa, Oklahoma
- No. 5 – Atlanta, Georgia
- No. 6 – Tampa, Florida
- No. 7 – New Orleans, Louisiana
- No. 8 – Knoxville, Tennessee
- No. 9 – Chicago, Illinois
- No. 10 – El Paso, Texas
