Beloved Austin barber shop cuts into a new corner of East 6th Street
Longtime haircut establishment and local hangout Birds Barbershop is relocating its popular East Sixth Street shop to a new address two blocks west. The new six-chair shop, now located at 1401 E. Sixth St., will open to the public on March 1, complete with a haircut promotion and more celebratory fun for regulars and visitors alike.
“Instead of going with a whole new design, we decided the design was going to be more of a remix of the original,” Birds co-founder Michael Portman writes in to CultureMap. “Same clients, same part of town, same vibe, with our East Sixth artist Bryan Keplesky updating what was already great about the original.”
In honor of the new spot, guests can take advantage of $6 off haircuts for the first six days of business. Proceeds from the six-day haircut special will benefit Austin’s historic preservation nonprofit Six Square. The organization creates programming in the area Birds inhabits, which is also referred to as "Austin's Black Cultural District."
Visitors can expect the same level of service experienced at the former locale, which opened its doors in 2008 as the brand’s third shop, but with the added benefit of validated parking. Unique cut requests and all hair types are welcome, as has always been the company’s ethos.
“Our stylists need to be able to cut all kinds of hair, and that takes years of experience before they can come to work at Birds,” Portman says. “Clients know this. It says ‘For All Y'all’ on the front door. So when someone wants a bald fade mullet with racing stripes, they're excited for the challenge. Mullets are back big time, by the way.”
The new Birds interior features Keplesky’s artwork, which is marked by a black and yellow color palette, graphic murals, and imaginative scenery, all reminiscent of the previous location. The space was created in collaboration with local architects at Mark Odom Studio and features construction by Franklin Alan, who are both known for their work at four other Birds shops.
Birds Barbershop locations are open seven days a week and can be found in nine different areas around Austin. To book a haircut at the new Birds Barbershop location starting March 1, go to birdsbarbershop.com or call the shop directly at 512-457-0400.
