Summer Movie Time
Austin Pets Alive! and the Paramount Theatre want to know: Is your dog Best inShow?
"God loves a terrier/ He made the Norwich merrier/ With his cute little derriere/ Yes, God loves a terrier!"
Whatever your favorite breed of canine, the lyrics from the Christopher Guest dog show mockumentary, Best in Show, evoke adorable images of happy, beautiful pups waiting to become stars.
So the question is: Does your pooch have have what it takes to be the Best of Austin?
Now you've got a chance to make your little Norwich or Cairn or Airedale the center of attention they deserve with the Paramount's Best in Show Photo Contest, an event to correspond with the Summer Classic Film Series screening of the insanely popular Guest comedy about the fictitious Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show.
To enter the Paramount's contest, just thumb through the millions of photos you have of your pooch and submit your BEST entry by Tuesday, July 10, through their Facebook contest page. Then encourage your friends and family to vote for your star-worthy pet as Best in Show so they can be announced on July 12.
Winners will receive a $50 gift certificate to Firecracker Dog and a $100 gift certificate made to Austin Pets Alive! in their name.
(For a leg up, you can even size up your dog's competition or just enjoy looking at Austin's cutest canines, by checking out the current entries on the page as well.)
Then come see one (or both) of the double feature screenings of Best in Show at the Paramount on Tuesday or Wednesday, which will be presented in tandem with Guest's top-notch mockumentary about musical theatre, Waiting for Guffman. You can even get into the theater for free by bringing a donation for Austin Pets Alive! off their wish list.
Both of Guest's movies accurately and lovingly poke fun at the best aspects of the communities they depict (the self-important pageantry of dog shows and the best worst parts about community theater), and the cast is largely overlapped with amazing improvisers like Eugene Levy, Parker Posey, Catherine O'Hara and Fred Willard.
So get into the fun. Be a puppy pageant mom for once, and help your best friend earn the spotlight he or she deserves.

Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show screen at 7 p.m. and 8:50 p.m., respectively, on July 10 and 11 at the Paramount Theatre. Tickets to both films are available online for $8.00 in advance, or $6.00 for Paramount Film Fans. Otherwise, Austin Pets Alive! is also accepting donations for admission.
