Ben Kweller to play Historic Scoot Inn, plus more Austin music picks for early July
It’s the start of July, which means you get to celebrate both America and Austin’s music scene. Some of these even offer an alternative July 4 celebration. See below for recommendations.
‘Hawk Dog Eating Contest at Mohawk – Tuesday, July 4
Mohawk will put on its first ever ‘Hawk Dog Eating Contest on Tuesday, July 4. (It does have some experience in queso, though.) Buzzy punk rockers Die Spitz will headline the event, and Party Van and Farmer's Wife will provide support. Tickets are $10. By the way, the winner of the hot dog eating contest will receive the following:
- Mohawk Golden Ticket to get you +1 into any show (pending capacity) for a year
- Mohawk merch
- $50 bar tab
- Gift cards to various businesses around town
Bob Schneider at HauteSpot – Tuesday, July 4
Get yourself to HauteSpot on Tuesday, July 4, for a loaded bill that’s topped by Bob Schneider and rounded out with the likes of Andrew Cashen (A Giant Dog, Sweet Spirit), Chief Cleopatra, and Evan Charles. Ticket options range from $10 to $50.
Semihelix at Hotel Vegas – Saturday, July 8
Dream pop act Semihelix have a new single (plus a video for it) titled “Slower Pace” that will be out on Saturday, July 8, and they’ll be ringing in its release that same night at Hotel Vegas. LABRYS will kick off this early show – doors are at 6:30pm. Cover will be $10 at the door.
Swiss Banks at The Parish – Friday, July 14
A trio of local bands – Swiss Banks, Candy Riot, and Mass Minor – have joined together for a “New Music Release Showcase” at the Parish on Friday, July 14. Don’t miss out on the chance to see these electronic-leaning up-and-comers. Tickets are $10.
Name Sayers at The 13th Floor – Friday, July 14
The new Name Sayers album, Joyboys In The Grindhouse, isn’t officially out until July 28, but you’ll be able to grab a copy at the art rock band’s pre-release show at the 13th Floor on Friday, July 14. Daymares and Exotic Fruitica will open. Tickets are $18.40.
Ben Kweller at Scoot Inn – Saturday, July 15
Ben Kweller and a noteworthy band consisting of Robert Ellis, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Ryan Dean will take over Historic Scoot Inn on Saturday, July 15. Ellis (a.k.a. the Texas Piano Man) will also serve as direct support for the evening. Furthermore, be sure to get there early, as the show will start with a video tribute to ZEV, the late Dorian Kweller's band. Tickets are $30.
