Austin's Paramount Theatre kicks off summer with classic and cult films

The Paramount Theatre will have a screening of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back on May 25.
After a whirlwind 50th anniversary celebrating Austin's iconic Paramount Theatre's Summer Classic Film Series, the annual program is returning with a new slate of fun films. Opening week runs from May 22-28.
The Summer Classic Film Series has been a long-running Austin tradition for moviegoers to enjoy new films, cult classics, and more, all within the Paramount Theatre's old school movie theater setting.
The 51st film series will feature more than 90 films — from blockbuster anniversary specials to 35mm screenings — and will include several picks from local organizations such as Hyperreal Film Club, Austin Film Festival, and Austin Asian American Film Festival.
Nine films will be shown during the series' opening week, with a special double feature scheduled for opening night on Thursday, May 22. Casablancawill return as the season opening film, followed by a 35mm screening of Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 crime drama Breathless.
On Saturday, May 24, the Paramount will start the festivities in the afternoon with a 50th anniversary screening of Steven Spielberg’s cult classic film Jawsat 3 pm. The fun continues on Saturday night when Texas filmmaker Robert Rodriguez presents the next double feature: A 7 pm screening of Martin Scorsese's crime thriller After Hours, followed by John Landis' action thrillerInto the Night. Both films were released in 1985 and are celebrating their 40th anniversaries this year.

Star Wars fans young and old won't want to miss out on the 45th anniversary screening of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back at 3 pm on Sunday, May 25. If they're brave enough, they can stay tuned for epic western thrillerThere Will Be Bloodin 35mm.
The opening week will conclude with a 35mm double feature of two iconic comedies directed by Christopher Guest – Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman– beginning at 7 pm on Wednesday, May 28.
Regular admission is $15 per person and $9 for children aged 12 and younger, and $11 for Film Fan Club members. Regular admission pricing also includes admission for double features. Patrons can also purchase Flix-Tix, which includes 10 tickets valid for the entire summer ($90 regular price, and $75 for fan club members).
The full lineup for the Paramount Theatre's 51st Summer Classic Film Series will be released later this spring.
