Designer Football Helmets FTW
Just in time for the Super Bowl, America's top fashion designers score with haute couture football helmets
Rarely do fashion and football interact on the field — until now. In honor of Super Bowl XLVIII, Bloomingdale's, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and the National Football League Foundation recruited a team of top fashion designers to create blinged-out helmets for the Fashion Touchdown.
The best part? You never have to leave your couch to score one.
You can bid on any of the bespoke helmets from now until Feb. 4. For all of the non-football fans (gasp!), that is two days after the Super Bowl, which is going down in MetLife Stadium Sunday. That's right, Jersey, get your party pants on.
But back to the fashion. Among the big-deal designers responsible for these haute couture helmets: Diane von Furstenberg, Billy Reid, Donna Karan, Badgley Mischka, Nicole Miller and Rachel Zoe, to name but a few. There are 48 helmets in all, and Bloomingdale's put it perfectly when it declared these creations put the "fantasy in football."
Better still: The auction's net proceeds benefit the NFL Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the health and safety of sports, youth football and the communities in which we live. In 2013, the foundation provided a $1.5 million grant to launch Heads Up Football, a comprehensive approach to promote a better and safer game.
