Austin's favorite taco restaurant finally rolls out downtown location
To the Tacodeli devotees who are gleefully reading this article, we're talking about Austin's other favorite taco chain. (Sorry.) But yes, Austin's own Torchy's Tacos is finally heading downtown.
Known for its "damn good tacos," the restaurant will move into the Northshore complex at 110 San Antonio St. An Eater Austin tipster was the first to spot the news in the form of an open permit issued on April 6. The downtown locale has since been confirmed by Torchy's, but they didn't reveal an opening date. The permit expires on October 3.
The news comes almost a month after Torchy's shuttered its original flagship trailer on South First Street with a delightful Thank You, Austin party complete with free tacos and queso, which incidentally are the only two things you need for a great party. The company currently operates 13 shops in the Austin area, including nine within the city limits.
Torchy's will join a stretch of the 2nd Street District that has been a hotbed for new restaurants over the past year, welcoming Le Politique and Flower Child, among others.
It remains unknown if the Northshore Torchy's will serve alcohol a la its Guadalupe Street and Mueller locations, but considering its the only homegrown taco chain to descend on downtown, its popularity is guaranteed, booze or no booze.
