6 classic Austin dive bars with dirt-cheap happy hour deals
Many Austin bars tempt happy hour guests with elaborate cocktails or rosé all day on a fancy patio, but even with a discount, those drinks can add up to a light wallet.
Save that money for a rainy day. At these classic Capital City bars, you can catch that post-work glow without having to pick up overtime. Sometimes a cushy barstool, a frosty beer, and a friendly crowd are the only things needed for a rollicking good time.
The Continental Club
This David Lynch-ian music venue on South Congress Avenue never bought into the craft cocktail revolution, instead keeping a stock of good beers and favorite liquors. Fittingly, it keeps the happy hour formula just as simple. Arrive before 7 pm on Monday through Friday and enjoy a buck off every libation.
Gourmands Neighborhood Pub
With a very lengthy 11 am to 7 pm runtime, guests may wonder when is it not happy hour at this sandwich shop and bar. The mainstays are $4 glasses of house wine and margaritas and $5 large apps like spinach artichoke dip, a hummus trio, or double decker nachos. But be sure to check out the themed specials throughout the week. Mexi-Mondays is a fave with $16 margarita pitchers and $5 well tequila shot with a Tecate or Modelo.
Hole in the Wall
Still kicking on campus after 45 years, this Capital City icon has barely raised its prices during that run. Budget conscious college students — and everyone else — should take full advantage of the daily social, held from 3-8 pm Monday through Saturday and all day Sundays. Order a $3 Lone Star draft, $3.50 well drink, or $4 Jim Beam or Jager pour, then head to the back of the bar for juicy burgers and spicy wings from the Hole in the Wall Kitchen — just opened in February.
The Jackalope
This rambling Sixth Street spot hosts happy hour every day except Saturday, with an enticing menu of $2 tall boys, $2 wells, and $4 margaritas. While the regular hours of 2-7 pm are generous, Monday extends the deals all day. As a bonus, guests can live out their Tiësto fantasies by bringing in their own vinyl as part of Mix Tape Mondays from 9 pm to close.
Mister Tramps Sports Pub and Cafe
A must-try for North Austinites, this somewhat shaggy sports bar rotates specials throughout the week to add to the already wallet-friendly fun. Still, true cheapskates will want to stop by on Monday between 4-11 pm, for drafts between $2-$4 and $3 well drinks. Those who can make it past midnight can get a pizza for a buck when combined with a pitcher of beer.
The White Horse
This East Austin honky-tonk has one of the longest weekday happy hours in Austin and boasts some of the cheapest drinks in town. From 3-8 pm, dive into $2 PBR drafts, $2.50 wells, and $2 Pearl cans. Or if some liquid courage is needed before a spin on the dance floor, down a Jameson, Deep Eddy Ruby Red, Crown, or Ketel One vodka shot. The $4 price should put some pep in your step.
