East Austin's latest closure gets a surprise second chance

Just last week, East Side Show Room surprised fans by announcing it would be closing for good. But rising from its ashes is a new concept from the same beloved team.
A bar called Ah Sing Den is expected to take over 1100 E. Sixth St. by the end of summer. The name appears to be a reference to an infamous London opium den in the 1800s run by a man named Ah Sing. The den was later incorporated into Charles Dickens' novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
The ESSR team shared a quote from Dickens when announcing the concept: "The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again."
The news should be enticing to ESSR devotees. While owners Trudy and Mickie Spencer still haven’t explained the exact reason for ESSR’s changeover, they did provide a tease to the opening of Ah Sing Den.
"As seven-year itches tend to ignite in us a need to embark on change, we hope you will join us in a new era of more unforgettable memories, love stories, and friendships," reads the announcement.
ESSR invites friends to party at the cocktail lounge Sunday, July 24, before it closes its doors for good. Get ready to raise a glass to East Austin newcomer Ah Sing Den later this summer.
