Grounds for celebration
Austin coffee shop spills the beans on boozy new location in Domain Northside

This fall, North Austinites will have a whole new reason to wake up. According to a release, caffeinated mini-chain Houndstooth Coffee will be opening its fourth Austin location in the Rock Rose district at Domain Northside.
Located a few steps away from Sway and Tarka Indian Kitchen, the new cafe will be an evolution of the company’s previous stores. Coffee and espresso drinks will, of course, remain a focus. Houndstooth is known for being coffee obsessive, with a devotion to the best beans and a training program for baristas that keeps them abreast of the latest buzzy trends.
But the shop is adding a different kind of buzz to its North Austin location. Houndstooth added beer, wine, and cocktails to the mix shortly after opening a third location at 2823 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in January. The Rock Rose location will follow suit with similar beverage options.
The mixed drink menu is still in development, but a company rep tells CultureMap that it will have much the same character as the menu at Jettison, the sister bar to Houndstooth that opened in Dallas in October 2016. That menu combines classic cocktails, house specialties heavily using mezcal and tequila, rotating seasonal drinks, and experimental cocktails exploring new flavors.
The design of the Rock Rose shop will also take some cues from Jettison. While general contractor Chioco Development and interior designer Kasey McCarty will work within the warm, minimalist footprint established by the first location on North Lamar Boulevard, they also incorporated new elements to provide space for customer interaction. A little cheeriness is provided from rainbow tiles, a touch borrowed from Dallas’ Walnut Hill location.
Since owner Sean Henry opened the first Houndstooth in 2010, the coffee nerd favorite has branched out to six locations spread across Dallas and Austin.
