After losing an important tenant, a popular downtown building for local food and music is facing demolition — and its current tenants are looking for new homes. Chief among the businesses fleeing 600 Lamar Boulevard, the former home of Waterloo Records, are Amy's Ice Creams and 24 Diner, which both assure customers they'll reopen.
Developers filed a permit Monday, December 22, to demolish the shared building; the City of Austin's building portal shows that the application is pending at the time of this article's publication.
Although fans of Amy's and 24 Diner may be surprised, 24 Diner partner Scott Hentschel says his team is prepared.
“We knew this very sad day was coming at some point in the future," said Hentschel in a written statement to CultureMap. "We didn’t know it was happening so fast until a couple months ago. 24 Diner has been serving great food and making great friends for 16 years at 6th & Lamar, and we hope to continue that tradition as we are in the process of finding a fabulous new location (or two)."
A statement from Amy's echos that the team is already setting up next steps.
"We’ve been aware of the demolition plans for some time and are currently looking for a new location within the same trade area," said the Amy's team in a separate statement. "Our 6th Street shop has meant so much to us over the years, and we’re deeply grateful for the memories, the community, and everyone who’s walked through those doors."
The Amy's team also volunteered that they remain on good terms with building management. "We’re thankful for our strong relationship with our landlord, Endeavor," the statement said, "and we’re excited to find the right new home so we can keep scooping and serving Austin for years to come."
It is not clear yet when the demolition will happen. The space cleared will be used to construct a 112-foot glass high-rise, which is a few stories lower than what was initially proposed according to KVUE.
In the meantime, Hentschel invites Austinites to stop by and make the most of 24 Diner's remaining days.
"During the time we have left, we will continue to have fun with our old friends, our new friends, and our wonderful employees until the wrecking ball shows up," said Hentschel. "Stay tuned for more details, and come by and say hi.”
