Austin's best restaurants and chefs crowned at 2025 Tastemaker Awards
After weeks of anticipation, Austin's best chefs, restaurants, and more winners of the 2025 CultureMap Tastemaker Awards can finally be revealed.
You read all about the acclaimed nominees (as chosen by our judging panel of industry experts) in our special editorial series, then voted for Best New Restaurant in a bracket-style tournament. On Thursday, May 8, it was time to award the trophies.
Austin's culinary trendsetters and hundreds of hungry fans gathered at Fair Market for our annual tasting event and awards ceremony celebrating the restaurants, bars, and chefs who've impacted the local dining scene most in the past year.
Guests sampled delicious bites from our nominees and sipped drinks from our sponsors before our winners were revealed. A portion of the proceeds benefited Central Texas Food Bank.
Without further ado, let's raise a glass to our our 2025 Austin Tastemaker Award winners:
Restaurant of the Year: Este
This instantly iconic East Austin eatery is renowned for its cold bar selections, from its oysters topped with salsa negra to its shrimp aguachile. Even while building one of the city's most celebrated daily dining services, the Este team has been busy giving garden tours, speaking at farms, and planning an unending list of special events.
Chef of the Year: Peter Klein, Holiday
L'Oca D'Oro alum and “Pasta King” Peter Klein is an East Coast native who has been capturing the hearts of Italian-food-loving Austinites for a decade. Opening Holiday alongside Erin Ashford and John DiCicco in 2023 served as a milestone for the trio, who have found a coveted balance between impeccable dining and a welcoming neighborhood hang.
Rising Star Chef of the Year: Heejae Galluccio, Birdie’s
After achieving success in the restaurant industry at famous New York restaurants including Gramercy Tavern and Aureole, Heejae Galluccio moved to Austin in 2020 to pursue new career ambitions. She has served as Birdie’s executive sous chef since 2023, relying on her prestigious education and experience to continue executing the restaurant’s seasonal menus.
Tancho Sushi offers affordable omakase.
Tancho Sushi won our reader's choice bracket-style tournament for 2025's Best New Restaurant.
Pastry Chef of the Year: Abby Love, Abby Jane Bakeshop
Abby Love is an industry veteran baker whose bread and pastries are highly regarded for their whole grain flavor. But you can’t go wrong with her savory offerings like breakfast sandwiches or quiches. In September 2024, she added soft serve ice cream and slushies to her menu, proving her versatility knows no bounds.
Bar of the Year: Equipment Room
Some bar-goers like a bit of je ne sais quoi, but Equipment Room knows exactly what it’s about and executes to the highest degree. Inspired by Japanese Jazz Kissa, or listening bars, this reservation-only speakeasy gets its impeccable music taste from partners at Breakaway Records and matches that energy with creative cocktails and Japanese snacks.
Best New Restaurant: Tancho Sushi
This sushi spot achieves what Austinites didn’t believe was possible: affordable, high-quality omakase. Tancho keeps things simple and reliable for sushi lovers and newcomers alike.
Neighborhood Restaurant of the Year: The Little Darlin'
We’d say atmosphere is everything, but we don’t want to discredit the Little Darlin’s burgers, fried chicken, or vibrant salads, which are all deserving of praise no matter where they’re served. It’s a nice bonus, then, that guests can enjoy the outdoorsy, dog-friendly back yard, complete with live music or metal and punk playlists.
Brewery of the Year: St. Elmo Brewing Co.
This popular Austin brewery opened its second taproom in East Austin in September, further expanding its reach from its South Austin roots. St. Elmo’s Carl Kölsch is essential for enduring the brutal Texas summers, while the Angus Irish stout is a mainstay for the milder months. Fruity brews like the Penelope Passionfruit sour and the Jimmy Peach blonde ale add unique flavors to the lineup.
Best Coffee Shop: Desnudo Coffee
This Instagram-worthy coffee trailer has gained acclaim for its savory-sweet miso lattes, made with in-house roasted coffee beans sourced directly from small farms. Desnudo’s dedication to working with coffee farmers and promoting sustainability through soil conservation are just a couple of the admirable efforts that make this coffee shop a beloved Austin staple.
The CultureMap Tastemaker Awards ceremony was sponsored by The Yuengling Company, Garrison Brothers Distillery, Hornitos, Texas Beef Council, Ritual Zero Proof, Seedlip, and PicMe Events.
