40 Years of Flavor
Austin staple Amy's Ice Creams marks 40 years with big party

Amy Simmons, founder of Amy's Ice Creams.
On June 8, Amy's Ice Creams is turning 40 years old, and all of Austin is invited to the party. The celebratory event at Bouldin Acres will include coffee and food from the host, live music, ice cream stunting, and even an attempt at a world record throwing and catching ice cream. Of course, there will also be limited-edition flavors to try.
This free, family- and dog-friendly event will be held from 11 am to 3 pm.
For Austinites who might not be familiar with Amy's or their scoopers' "ice cream tricks," it's not something to miss. Amy's scoopers are renowned for their abilities to scoop up heaps of ice cream, throw them into the air, and slam them down in order to best mix them up with your preferred toppings. The science is still out on whether or not this is, in fact, the best method for mixing toppings, but it does look cool.
"Our scoopers are performers, athletes, and artists," said Amy's giving director Jess Banks in a press release about the event. "For years, they've turned a simple scoop into something magical — and we’re letting that fly again (literally) for our 40th.”
Amy's Ice Creams is one of those Old Austin staples that, somehow — despite an ever-changing city — has not only remained, but has remained just as weird and uniquely Austin as the day it opened. This party promises to be the sort of joyful mess that only Amy's can create.
Happenings include:
- Local vendor booths
- Haircuts by Bird's Barber Shop
- A merch and raffle table
- A photo booth
- Face painting
- Lawn games and kids' corner
Pets aren't just welcome at the event; they're the guests of honor. A portion of proceeds from the vent will go to Emancipet, a beloved local nonprofit that ensures pet owners have access to affordable veterinary care. Owners can enter their dog into a runway show and costume contest, and there will be mini-pools to keep furry contestants cool. Tomlinson's Pet Store will supply prize giveaways.
