Gettin' all dirty
Work hard, eat dirt: Columbia Muddy Buddy around the corner with kickoff partythis Saturday
- The Columbia Muddy Buddy signature finale involves crawling through a50-foot-long mud pit.
- There are 5 challenged in the Columbia Muddy Buddy Course.
- Teams of two knock out the 6 to 7 mile mountain bike and trail running course.
Every year I say I'm going to do the Columbia Muddy Buddy and every year I forget to sign up and kick myself when I see photos of all the fun fit people rolling around in the mud.
Well, not this year! This year not only am I signing up but I'm getting a head start on my training with the official Muddy Buddy kickoff party this Saturday at Zilker Park. No, it's not like a SXSW party with loud music and booze. This party will actually have you feeling good about yourself the next day!
The morning will begin with a "kick-butt" workout lead by Camp Gladiator full of all sorts of fun activities (if you consider burpees fun) guaranteed to have you sweating out the toxins from a crazy Friday night.
The best part of the race is the signature finale, which involves both teammates crawling through a 50-foot-long mud pit before crossing the finish line together.
After the workout you can hang out and enjoy drinks (like Gatorade, not rum) and snacks (like bananas, not fried chicken) with your new workout buddies. Participants at the kickoff event will also have a chance to secure one of the coveted spots in the Columbia Muddy Buddy race at a discounted price, among other perks.
Columbia Muddy Buddy Ride & Run events are adventure races that require two-person teams to navigate a six to seven-mile mountain bike and trail-running course, containing five challenging obstacles. The best part (so I've heard) is the signature finale, which involves both teammates crawling through a 50-foot-long mud pit before crossing the finish line together.
Additionally, Columbia Muddy Buddy partners with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which raises money for athletes with disabilities and provides them with adaptive equipment.
The race, which usually sells out, takes place in eight cities and will be held in Austin on May 12th.
"We've picked the cities that have the highest quality of mud, most buddy support and provide the best race experience," says Bob Babbitt, founder of Columbia Muddy Buddy.
Well they certainly picked the right city. Austinites are always up for eating dirt and having a good time.
