Get Fit Stay Cool
8 indoor Austin activities to have fun and stay cool this summer
In Austin there is a certain time of year when “out of the house” translates directly to “into the oven.” When you need some physical activity to maintain sanity but are reluctant to risk heat stroke, consider foregoing the trail and staying indoors. These eight Austin activities help you to engage in mind- and body-boosting motion without sacrificing air conditioning.
Altitude Austin
Wall-to-wall interconnected trampolines make this the ultimate Austin bounce house. This sweet concept fills a 23,000-square-foot space for a day of (exhausting) family fun. An hour of bouncing will run you $12.95, and Altitude is open Monday through Thursday 10 am to 9 pm, Friday 10 am to 11 pm, Saturday 9 am to 11 pm and Sunday 1-8 pm.
Know before you go: Altitude regularly offers special pricing and packages including pizza for events like Teen Night and Friday Night Friendzy.
K1 Speed
Sure, you could watch world class Formula 1 drivers at COTA under the blistering sun. But wouldn’t you rather fulfill your need for speed driving your very own electric go-kart indoors instead? Of course you would. The starting flag drops Monday through Thursday noon to 10 pm, Friday 11 am-11 pm, Saturday 10 am to midnight and Sunday 10 am to 9 pm. One race at K1 Speed Austin race is $22.
Know before you go: To pilot an adult kart you have to be at least 4 feet 10 inches tall. More diminutive racers at least 4 feet tall can take out a junior kart.
Austin Bouldering Project
Austin Bouldering Project is an indoor gym featuring artificial rock climbing walls, yoga studio, and more. Whether you've scaled some of the world's highest peaks, or are a bouldering novice, ABP has a workout for you. It’s open weekdays 6 am to 11 pm and weekends 9 am to 10 pm. An adult all-day pass is $16.
Know before you go: Climbing shoes are essential and available for rent. You get free shoe rental your first visit.
Blazer Tag
Measuring the number of enemy aliens on its roof of the Ben White building, Blazer Tag is clearly Austin’s laser tag leader. It does all right on other stats, offering a large play area complete with a friendly staff and plenty of activities. Bring the family and zap opponents Monday 4-9 pm, Thursday 4-10 pm, Friday 4 pm to midnight, Saturday 10 am to midnight and Sunday 11 am-9 p.m. A 20-minute game is $8.99.
Know before you go: Call or check for special summer hours. Blazer Tag is normally open Tuesday and Wednesday only for private events.
iFly Austin
The idea of free falling is probably far from the minds of rush-hour commuters doing the creep-and-beep past iFly’s lofty facility on North 183. But nonetheless you really can fall, float, fly, and tumble on an airy torrent there from 9 am-9 pm Sunday through Thursday, and Friday and Saturday until 10 pm. Two flights for a first-timer are $69.95.
Know before you go: A pre-fall instruction session is mandatory, as is wearing the provided flight suit and helmet.
SPiN
After a buzzed about opening, Austin’s newest pingpong parlor is currently serving customers Monday through Saturday from 11 am-2 am and Sundays until 10 pm. Pricing depends on what time of day you show up to demonstrate that killer topspin serve. Off-peak rates of $25 per hour are mostly weekdays before 5 pm and after 10 pm. Rates are $39 per hour most of the rest of the time.
Know before you go: Spin may be changing its hours soon so call or check the website before you pack up your paddles.
Union Underground Bowling
Why merely bowl indoors when you can bowl underground? Think about it — the very idea is cooling. And you can knock ‘em down at the Texas Union’s subterranean lanes Monday through Saturday 10 am to close (often midnight or later) and Sunday noon to close. Non-UT students generally pay $3 per game before 5 pm on weekdays, and $4 after 5 pm weekdays and all day Saturday and Sunday.
Know before you go: You can rent shoes for $2 per pair.
Urban Axes
Urban Axes would make a great name for a rock band but it’s actually an indoor axe-throwing bar. Axe-throwing, of course, resembles darts, except with hatchets. Group rates for a two-and-a-half-hour session are $35 per person. Walk-in hours are Wednesday 6-9 pm, Thursday 1-9 pm, Saturday 11 am-9 pm and Sunday 11 am-6 pm. It’s closed Monday and Tuesday, and Friday is usually reserved for groups.
Know before you go:Of course you can drink alcohol while tossing hatchets. But it’s BYOB and beer and wine only — no hard liquor.
