friday night pick
Todd Barry graces the Scottish Rite stage tonight — don’t miss it!
Todd Barry’s appeared on Flight of the Conchords, Dr. Katz and more of your favorite comedy shows, but it’s his live act that’s sincerely unmissable, showcasing stand-up that — for it’s deadpan delivery, wry anti-humor and mundane observations — is always compelling. But don't take our word for it, you have a chance to see for yourself tonight at the Scottish Rite Theater.
Barry’s first special, a Comedy Central Presents, aired all the way back in 1999, and he's released three albums since then; he’s an acclaimed voice actor and writer, too, but it’s his wry take on Twitter, over @ToddBarry, that’s earned him the Internet’s attention as of late.
Todd Barry, the original Black Swan:
Buzzfeed has helpfully compiled a Best Of list of Barry participating in trending topics, if you haven’t been following along; the comic also once released a PDF list of his 158 most underappreciated tweets of 2010, if you really want to dive in. He recently wrote about his very strange road stories (or lack thereof) in BlackBook, and if you’re looking for even more Barry-related media, we recommend checking out this 2008 interview with Carrie Brownstein for Monitor Mix.
Barry's Advil commercial audition:
For attendees of tonight's show, there's an added bonus: These badass limited edition posters, designed by Kii Arens to commemorate Barry's May tour, will be available for purchase.
Kath Barbadoro and Cameron Buchholtz (both semi-finalists in this year’s Funniest Person in Austin contest) are also on the lineup, so get there early to kick off your weekend with a few of our favorite comics.
Tickets to tonight’s show at the Scottish Rite are still available online; doors at 8 p.m., show at 9 p.m.
And just because, here’s a clip of Todd saying “Louis C.K. sucks” in front of the Texas Capitol Building:
