weekend roundup
Top event picks for Formula 1 weekend inside the city limits
Welcome to Formula 1 Weekend! The buzz has been building for months, and we're finally ready to make our mark on the international racing scene. If your weekend plan doesn't include dressing in your finest racing attire and heading out to Elroy, as our weekend roundup proves, a lot of Formula 1 fun can be had inside the city limits.
Of course, there are also plenty of fun local happenings, too. However you slice it, there's no way you can claim boredom this weekend in an internationally-charged ATX. Here are our top event picks for the weekend:
Aerosmith with Cheap Trick
It’s not every day that a luscious-lipped legend performs in Austin. Steven Tyler and his band are back on tour, and thanks to Formula 1, you don't have to travel south to San Antone or north to Dallas to catch a legendary rock show — just head to the Frank Erwin Center. Aside from the classic rock standards ("Sweet Emotion" and "Walk this Way, anyone?), we've heard the group is bringing a stellar stage show with all of the necessary components: plenty of lights, smoke and noise. Cheap Trick opens the show, just in case you needed one more reason to revisit the hay day of rock n' roll.
Dave Foley at the Paramount
Also on Friday night, international funny man Dave Foley will bring his stand up act to the Paramount Theatre. An original “Kid in the Hall,” Foley is also known for recurring roles on Newsradio, Scrubbs and Will & Grace. If you don't recognize his face, there's a chance you'll know his voice from such projects as A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2 and South Park. Foley plays the Paramount on Friday night with performances at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Fan Fest
You don't have to venture to Elroy this weekend to have some F1 fun. Austin Fan Fest is taking place downtown starting Friday, with an impressive mixture of international music acts and down-home Austin charm. On Friday night, Flo Rida headlines the Austin Convention Center (opposite Aerosmith at the Erwin Center), and on Saturday night Enrique Iglesias and Nelly take over the Convention Center stage. The festival, spanning 11 blocks of downtown, will also feature a few of Austin's favorite things: local food, vendors and spirits.
Amazing Acro-Cats
Who doesn’t love furry felines completing amazing feats? The Amazing Acro-Cats return to Austin with a one-of-a-kind variety show that first marveled Austin audiences in 2011. The touring show features a cast of cats (yes, real cats!) that ride skateboards, ring bells, roll barrels, walk the high wire, climb ropes, push shopping cars, jump through hoops and run the agility course. You can catch the Amazing Acro-Cats this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Blue Theater.
E.A.S.T.
This fall marks the 11th time that East Austin artists have generously offered up their studios (and souls) for Austin residents to explore and marvel over the course of two weekends. Should this be your first time participating in E.A.S.T., here's the rundown: All artist studios and exhibition spaces are free and open to the public this weekend from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Not sure where to start or how to navigate the East Austin Studio Tour? Check out our handy guide on where to go, who to know and what to see.
A Christmas Affair
We’re sure you already know that the holidays are right around the corner (Hello, turkey and stuffing!). Start the shopping early and avoid a less than ideal last-minute Christmas Eve trip to the mall by participating in the Junior League’s A Christmas Affair. The 37th annual event takes place at the Palmer Events Center all weekend and features over 200 merchants. Proceeds help the Junior League continue its community service work in Austin through such programs as Coats for Kids and FIT (Food In Tummies).
Now go, enjoy this landmark weekend, Austin! We'll see you after the race.
