Artificial Intimacy
AI avatars go on first blind dates in debut of strange new Austin dating app
In a world where time is as precious as a perfect match, a new dating app is trying to redefine the pursuit of love. Austin singles tired of endless swiping and texting can let artificial intelligence handle the opening moves with Volar, a fresh approach to online matchmaking.
Volar uses AI to facilitate connections between users. After a quick onboarding process, an AI avatar is generated based on the user’s personality, tastes, and preferences. Users can have their AI-powered "wingman" engage in conversational matches with other users' avatars as an initial introduction.
The app made its debut this month in Austin, representing Volar's initial exploration into AI-assisted dating. As this approach to digital matchmaking is still new, the app provides an opportunity for early adopters to explore and shape the future landscape of online dating.
"There's a lot of anxiety when talking to strangers. In the beginning, it's awkward, even if you're good at it," Volar creator Ben Chiang tells CultureMap.
Matched avatars have introductory conversations to filter potential partners before the real users interact. Users can observe the conversation between their avatar and a match's before deciding whether to take over messaging. Once a good match is made, the real people behind the avatars can connect to continue learning about one another.
Essentially, as put by the Volar website, this is just another form of blind dating. The app makes the connection, you learn a few important highlights about the person you're about to connect with, and the rest is up to fate. If it's not a foolproof dating strategy, at least it's something odd and new, and hopefully low-maintenance.
It's not just iOS users that can download the Volar app; The company opted to make this a web-based app to open its matchmaking AI to a wider audience.
"One of the big things that we wanted to do is make this accessible for as many people as we could," Chiang explains. "I think the primary problem that we have is that swiping through photos is great, right? But after you go through the swiping stage, there's a lot of icebreaker[s] waiting. You constantly introduce yourself. And you keep doing that over and over again."
Volar’s bold AI approach aims to change the face of modern dating. Central Texans ready for romance 2.0 can download Volar now and let their AI avatar take the first steps.
