Austin butters up singles as the No. 5 best U.S. city for dating on new list
Relationships can be complicated, and for many Americans, casual dating or remaining single can be the preferred option. Luckily for Austinites, a new report surveying the best U.S. cities for singles in 2024 has placed fun-loving Austin in the No. 5 spot.
"More than 182" American cities (whatever that means) were evaluated based on 35 metrics across three major categories: economics, fun and recreation, and dating opportunities. Metrics included the average price of a cocktail, the number of restaurants per capita, the gender balance of single people, and more. Rankings were determined on a scale of 100 for the most favorable conditions for single Americans.
Austin earned an overall score of 60.31, which was only 3.57 points off from the No. 1-ranking U.S. city: Seattle, Washington.
The Texas capital performed the best in the "fun and recreation" category, which makes sense given the vast number of attractions that are popping up throughout the city. Many new restaurants and cocktail bars have opened their doors in 2023 alone, several of which are now earning national recognition. All that to say – there are plenty of new spots around town to plan an ideal date night.
Especially around the holiday season, Austin lights up with so many colorful holiday displays and activities that the city has earned the title as the No. 1 most festive city in the nation. Austinites can impress their dates by visiting the classic Trail of Lights, or they can take a more casual, "weird" route by strolling through an iconic Central Austin neighborhood for the 37th Street Lights.
WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe shared her insight on the influence of single Americans living in a city that caters to all types of dating opportunities.
"Where you live can have a big impact on your love life – if a city has a high population of singles and is packed with activities that you’ll enjoy, then you’ll have a better chance to meet someone with similar interests and can go on higher-quality dates," she said. "In the current economy, a city that minimizes costs through inexpensive restaurants and venues, plus free things to do, is especially attractive."
Although Austin is a good venue for dates, the city could not measure more subjective things like style and grooming standards, maturity, or desire to settle down versus just having a good time for now. Pop in on any online discussion about dating in Austin and you'll hear one common refrain: With so many people moving here with few contacts, then moving away, many locals are feeling frustrated at the prospect of finding someone who is taking dating seriously.
Austin was the only Texas city to earn a spot in the top five. Other Texas cities that earned spots in the top 100 include Houston (No. 60), Lubbock (No. 77), El Paso (No. 85), San Antonio (No. 87), and Corpus Christi (No. 97).
