Song to Song
Remember that celebrity-filled movie filming in Austin? Here are the details.
Back in 2012, some of Hollywood's biggest actors — Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman, and Rooney Mara — were spotted filming around Austin for an untitled project from acclaimed director Terrence Malick. Other than the stars, details about the movie were scarce, until now.
Malick has revealed the title, synopsis, and release date for his newest film. Song to Song, previously known as Weightless, will be dropped by Broad Green Pictures on March 17.
Even better? Austin will host the world premiere. SXSW Film has announced that Song to Song will be this year's opening night movie screening on March 10.
The premise is as follows: "In this modern love story set against the Austin, Texas, music scene, two entangled couples — struggling songwriters Faye (Mara) and BV (Gosling), and music mogul Cook (Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares (Portman) — chase success through a rock 'n' roll landscape of seduction and betrayal."
The film also stars Val Kilmer, Christian Bale, and Haley Bennett, as well as a cavalcade of notable musicians. The list includes Patti Smith, Florence Welch (of Florence and the Machine), Lykke Li, Iggy Pop, Alan Palomo, Iron & Wine, and Arcade Fire.
Song to Song isn't the only world premiere scheduled for SXSW. The festival added American Gods, The Melody of Dust, Residente, Signature Move, Small Town Crime, and Spettacolo to the 2017 lineup.
