Drafthouse's adults-only camp returns to Austin with explosive twist

For the past four years, the Alamo Drafthouse has taken over a real-life children's summer camp and transformed it into a fun, somewhat debaucherous adults-only party. This year, the Austin-based brand is once again hosting its famed camp, but this time it's adding an explosive new element.

Camp Kaboom returns May 8-10 for three days of camp activities, action flicks, food and drinks, dance parties, and the world premiere of the Drafthouse's MacGruber Quote-Along, complete with actual explosions. The three-day, two-night affair takes place at Marble Falls' Camp Champions, a real summer camp offering all the fun activities of camp without the boring parts like rules and curfews.

Attendees spend the day competing in a range of activities, including canoeing, archery, dodgeball, The Blob, swimming, rope swings, wall-climbing, pirate ship ropes course, and Sloshball, among others. (For those who are more indoor campers, there are also arts and crafts activities.)

Meals featuring traditional camp fare will be served in the mess hall, along with s'mores and plenty of booze throughout the day.

At night, attendees can take part in film screenings and late-night dance parties before heading to the actual cabins along with their bunkmates (or friends you've enlisted to join you). Each cabin will be assigned a color — red or plaid, the latter of which isn't technically a color, but we digress — that will be used in team-based activities. Throughout the weekend, each team can rack up points in different activities, and the winner is announced at the end of camp.

The highlight of the weekend will be a screening of MacGruber complete with live explosions, celery relay races, and other surprises. Following its premiere at Camp Kaboom, the MacGruber Quote-Along will then screen at theaters nationwide.

“What better way to debut the MacGruber Quote-Along than an outdoor screening with live explosions?” says Henri Mazza, Alamo Drafthouse’s VP of content, sponsorship, and events. “Well, how about an entire weekend where we take over a summer camp and host MacGruber-themed games? And yes, one of those games will be a celery relay race.”

Tickets for Camp Kaboom are on sale now, and a portion of proceeds go directly to Austin Food & Wine Alliance, a local nonprofit dedicated to fostering awareness and innovation in the Central Texas culinary community. Tickets are priced at $225 for an individual (you can pick team red or plaid before purchasing) or $2,225 for an entire 10-person cabin. For more information here
