Former Emo's downtown location to re-open for a SXSW run
If you missed your chance to revisit the legendarily dirty bathrooms and bleak courtyard of the downtown Emo’s location before it closed its doors for the final time in December, well, worry not: The venue (or at least the building) will rise from the grave for the week of SXSW to host showcases from Brother Ali, The Sword, Skrillex, Mobb Deep, Pennywise, Jimmy Cliff, Quiet Company, Not In The Face!!, Free Energy and more.
The Emo’s name — and presumably the sign, and the Johnny Cash-signed barstool, and the S&M-themed Flintstones mural — will be gone from the building on 603 Red River, but there will be music on its stages once more.
The venue is listed on the SXSW directories under the names “The Main” (the larger, outside stage) and “The Jr.” (the smaller, indoor stage). There’s not a venue listed as “The Annex” anywhere, so it’s likely that the “Emo’s Annex” of years past — also known as the parking lot across the street from the famed club — will be one of the few spots at this year’s SXSW to not play host to live music.
You may not get a venue called Emo's, but you get a venue that's been Emo's.
Still, two out of three ain’t bad, especially given the giant “for lease” banner that’s been hanging like a blight on the collective memories of everyone whose formative music-loving experiences took place at the intersection of Sixth and Red River.
But those folks shouldn’t get too psyched about the building’s return to life as a music venue. While the full details of this arrangement aren’t yet clear, there’s nothing to indicate that this is a phoenix-like rise from the ashes for a once-great rock club; it’s much more likely that this is the zombified hand of 603 Red River shooting out of its grave for one last grasp at some SXSW dough before it’s put down for good and the building is developed into a hotel or whatever it is they end up putting in the space.
Even if that’s the case, though, this is refreshing news for those who struggled to imagine what a SXSW on Red River would look like without Emo’s. For one more year, at least, the Red River landscape will include stacked bills at The Mohawk and Stubb’s, cranky door guys proudly charging a cover to every out-of-town asshole with an irrelevant badge at the non-participating Beerland and some killer lineups at the building formerly known as Emo’s. Which will hopefully ameliorate the disappointment of people who are bummed out that the still-extant Emo's East location on Riverside is apparently opting out of the official SXSW showcase business for 2012 in favor of hosting some free day (and night) parties.
You may not get a venue called Emo's, but you get a venue that's been Emo's.
Representatives of SXSW weren’t able to confirm for us who would be running the venue at press time, so there are still some lingering questions. But based on the lineups each night for The Main and The Jr. — which are both packed with artists who’ve either rocked those stages before or who would have fit in perfectly, given the chance (including Skrillex, which means get ready for a friggin’ mobscene, y’all) — it seems like a SXSW on Red River without Emo’s will look a lot like a SXSW on Red River with Emo’s, and there’s something about that that even a zombie could love.
